Just got back from a trip to the Red River Gorge and saw something weird with tents

Half the campsites had these huge, heavy canvas tents, while the rest were using super light backpacking ones. It made me think, is the old-school, durable gear better for car camping, or are we all just paying for fancy, light stuff we don't need? What's your take on heavy vs. light for a place like that?

My buddy brought his ultralight tent car camping last year. A branch fell and tore right through the rainfly. Heavy canvas would have just bounced it.

Canvas can get moldy in humid spots like the gorge though, @terry_bailey35.
