My sister laughed at my $340 tent setup until it rained 6 inches in Ouachita
So last month my sister and I went camping in the Ouachita Mountains and she kept giving me grief about my gear setup. She had borrowed this cheap $40 tent from a friend and I brought my trusty 2 person that I paid $340 for three years ago. The whole drive up she kept saying I got ripped off and how her tent would be just fine. We got to the site around 4pm and set everything up and hers went up in like 5 minutes which I have to admit was impressive. Then it started raining at like 2am and did not stop for almost 6 inches worth. I woke up dry and warm and she woke up in a puddle with her sleeping bag soaked through. She spent the rest of the night in my tent floor with me and we barely fit but at least she was dry. The next morning she admitted maybe the cheap tent wasn't the deal she thought it was. I still don't think you need to spend a fortune but the difference between a $40 tent and one that's actually seam sealed and has a real rainfly is not even close. Anyone else have a story where the price difference actually showed up when it mattered?
My buddy Dave bought a $30 tent at a yard sale in Fayetteville and bragged about it for weeks. First trip out it poured at Devils Den and he woke up floating in two inches of water with his phone dead. He went and got a real one the next weekend and never brought up that yard sale tent again.
