The day I stopped using a camp stove windscreen
Cooked bacon at 10,000 feet last summer and it took 45 minutes. My buddy pointed out my windscreen was trapping too much heat near the canister. Swapped to a simple twig fire for wind protection and had breakfast done in 15. Has anyone else ruined a trip by overcomplicating their stove setup?

Gotta disagree here. I've been using a windscreen for years and never had that problem. The trick is making sure you leave a gap at the bottom for airflow, not just wrapping the whole thing tight around the canister. I think your buddy might have been onto something about too much heat, but that's more about how you set it up than the screen itself. A twig fire works in a pinch, sure, but it's not as consistent on windy days and can be a hassle if you're in a dry area.

Honestly, does it really matter that much? A twig fire works fine.
