TIL that my $45 tent from Walmart has a hydrostatic head rating of only 800mm
Found it on a gear spreadsheet someone posted in a backpacking sub, and after 3 hours of rain last weekend my sleeping bag was totally soaked has anyone else tested theirs and found it way lower than you thought?

Yeah, 800mm is pretty low, but most cheap tents aren't meant for serious downpours anyway. For $45 you're basically buying a glorified rain fly that'll work okay in a light drizzle if you pitch it right. Unless you're planning to camp in monsoons regularly, testing gear specs like that is overthinking a budget purchase.

My old tent from the 90s had a big rain fly that kept me dry even in a bad storm.
