Took me 9 tries to get my tent stake puller to actually work

I bought a cheap stake puller from a gas station near Flagstaff last summer and it bent on the second rock. After that I spent a whole weekend trying to wedge it under stakes with a rock as a hammer, which just scratched up my new tent poles. Finally tried a 12 inch steel pry bar from Home Depot and it popped every stake in under 10 minutes. Has anyone else fought with a stake puller longer than they want to admit, or did you find a trick that actually works on hard ground?
