Tried a hammock camping setup for the first time and froze half the night
I decided to ditch my tent and try a hammock setup last weekend in the Smokies. Thought it’d be more comfortable and lighter to carry. But I got a cheap Amazon hammock and didn’t get an underquilt, just a sleeping bag. The temperature dropped to 45 degrees around 2 AM and my back was like ice. The sleeping bag got compressed under me and had zero insulation value. I spent the rest of the night shivering and wishing I’d done more research. Lesson learned: a hammock needs proper insulation underneath, not just a bag. Anyone else get caught out with a cold night in a hammock?

That back being like ice" is exactly what happened to my buddy Mark... he tried a hammock in Pisgah and ended up sleeping in his truck at 3 AM.

Mark once tried a Walmart hammock in the Smokies and a squirrel chewed through the strap.
