Warning: my bargain tent gave out in a downpour
I bought a $50 tent off Amazon for a weekend trip to Lake Tahoe last spring and figured it would hold up for one night. By 2 AM the seams were leaking bad enough that my sleeping bag was soaked and I ended up sleeping in the car. Anyone else tried to save cash on a tent and had it fail at the worst time?

Right? My cheap tent turned into a swimming pool at 3am. Never again.

My $40 tent from a discount store split right down the center seam at 2am during a storm at Yosemite. I had to wrap myself in a trash bag and wait for sunrise. @the_eva is right, never again. Those cheap tents use bad waterproofing that fails the first time it actually rains hard. You spend more on gear repairs or replacements than if you just bought something decent from the start. It is a lesson I learned the hard way, and now I check every seam and zipper before I trust a tent for real weather.
