Found out my college spent $12,000 fighting a student speech complaint last year

I was digging through budget reports from my university's public records request and stumbled on a line item for 'legal fees related to student expression' that was over twelve grand. Turned out a student group got sued for putting up flyers that someone found offensive, and the school paid lawyers to defend the group's right to post them. How many kids could use that money for textbooks instead?

lmao wait that's actually crazy, $12k just to defend some flyers? i get protecting free speech and all but that's a whole semester of books for like 10 kids right there. feels like there's gotta be a middle ground between defending the principle and literally burning money.

Seems like everything turns into a money pit when people dig in their heels.
