Getting a speaker uninvited from our campus took me 6 weeks and 14 emails and I still feel dumb
Back in October I tried to get a speaker uninvited from our student union because his talk was basically a paid ad for his own book. I figured it would take one email to the events office. It took 6 weeks and 14 emails total, and I had to file a formal request under our school's speech policy before anyone would even read it. The events director kept saying free speech means they can't cancel anyone, which is true, but they never explained the actual process for reviewing complaints. I finally found a 12 page PDF from 2019 that spelled it out, and nobody in the office even knew it existed. If your school makes this stuff this hard to figure out, how is a regular student supposed to push back on anything?
