Got kicked out of my own club's debate night for asking a question about the rules
So last Thursday at the student union here at Kent State, my own club, the Free Inquiry Society, hosted a debate night on campus speech zones. I was on the panel, and about 20 minutes in I asked whether our own club's sign up sheet counted as a speech zone since we only let members talk during open mic. The moderator, who is a friend of mine, cut my mic and asked me to leave for quote disrupting the format. I sat in the hallway for 40 minutes eating vending machine pretzels and texting my roommate about how ironic the whole thing was. Next morning I typed up a one page note explaining what happened and dropped copies at the club table, and by noon three other members had quit the board with me. We ended up forming a splinter group that meets in the same room an hour earlier, and honestly we get more people now. Has anyone else had a free speech club that turned out to be weirdly strict about its own rules?
