Got written up for a chalk protest in the quad, but my friend's sign got ignored, why the difference?
Last month at Ohio State, a group of us drew free speech messages on the sidewalk with chalk during a planned event, and campus police told us to stop because it was "defacing school property." My friend did almost the same thing two days later with a sign on a stick, and nobody said a word to him. Is it just me, or does it seem like the rules only get enforced on certain kinds of speech and not others?
Sounds like a pretty weak reason to get upset if you ask me. Chalk on a sidewalk washes off with one rain and nobody really cares, so the school probably just used it as an excuse since you had a whole group doing it as an event. One guy holding a sign by himself isn't the same thing as a bunch of people drawing all over school grounds, so of course they reacted different. Maybe the cop that day was just in a bad mood too, that happens. This feels more like a "rule got enforced on you and not him" thing than some big plot against your speech. Not everything is a conspiracy, sometimes it's just timing and who's watching.
