I used to think campus speech codes were fine until I watched a student get punished over a 4 word email at Ohio State
Two years ago I figured a few rules just kept things civil. Then a friend in Columbus got hauled into a conduct hearing over a joke he sent to one classmate in 2023, and it took him 5 weeks to clear his name. What finally got me was how long it dragged out, not the rule itself. Has anyone else seen a school stretch a simple complaint into a whole semester?
A buddy of mine at Michigan told me his roommate waited almost two months just to hear back on a complaint that ended with no punishment at all. The rule itself was never the scary part for me either, it was how the school let it hang over his head for weeks with no clear end. That kind of drag can mess with your head way more than the rule ever could.
