My school had two different ways to handle protests and one was way better

Last semester at my state university, they let a really controversial speaker come and just had extra security. It was loud but fine. This semester, a different group wanted to host an event and the admin made them pay a $3000 'security fee' and move it to a tiny room off campus. That basically killed it. The first way respected free speech, the second way just used money and rules to shut it down quietly. It's the same school, just different people in charge. Why do so many colleges pick the second option when the first one clearly works?

Notice how they make rules that sound fair but really just control us.

$3000 is basically the cost of a cheap used car, so that's a pretty big hurdle for a student group to clear. But honestly, having to pay for your own security and find your own space is just how it works in the real world. Maybe the first speaker's event was fine because they had the money and planning for it.

Ugh, this reminds me of when my town tried to stop a community garden by adding a huge permit fee. They didn't say no, they just made it impossible to afford. It's the same old trick of hiding behind a rule instead of taking a real stand.
