Student gov shut down our guest speaker event 2 hours before doors opened

Last semester at my school in Ohio, we booked a guy to talk about media bias. The student government president said it might cause "tension" and pulled our funding. I had to scramble and find 400 bucks from the journalism department just to keep the room. The speaker still showed up and we had like 80 people in a room meant for 200. It felt good to make it happen anyway, but it sucked that one person could almost kill it. Has anyone else had an admin or student group quietly block an event like that?

My buddy runs the college Republicans at our school and I used to roll my eyes when hed claim the admin was blocking stuff. Then last fall our engineering club wanted to bring in a guy who worked on autonomous cars and the student senate said no because he had a controversial opinion on self driving regulations or something. I was actually on the funding committee and saw them kill it for basically no reason. I was pretty shocked honestly, made me a lot more sympathetic to the smaller groups getting run over by the student government politics.

Read a piece in The Atlantic that said 40 percent of student event denials were over vague political concerns, @skyler_mitchell.
