That time I doubted a student group's petition drive but they were totally legit

I saw a table near the dining hall last month claiming to collect signatures for campus speech rights, figured it was some fringe group, but then I checked their database and they had 450 verified student signatures from last semester alone. Has anyone else written off a campus free speech group only to find out they were actually doing real work?

450 signatures sounds like a real number if they actually checked IDs. I've seen groups inflate their numbers before but if they have a proper database that's different. Did you ask them how they verify each signature?

Wait, is the 450 signatures from last semester actually verified or just something they claimed? I mean, it's pretty easy for any group to say they have that many, but actually checking student IDs against a database is a different story. Maybe it's just me, but I'd want to see how they define "verified" before I fully buy in.
