The week a guest speaker got shut down at my school changed my mind on campus rules

Last October, we had a guy from a conservative group come to speak at our student union. About 50 protesters showed up and chanted so loud nobody could hear him for 20 minutes. Security eventually moved him to a different room, but it took 45 minutes to get set up again. I went in thinking free speech means you let anyone talk, but watching that made me wonder if there are limits. The speaker got 10 minutes of actual time before he packed up and left. Has anyone else seen a protest go too far on your campus?

Man that's wild. So the speaker basically got silenced by the crowd itself, not by any school rule. But here's what I'm wondering - did anyone actually listen to what he had to say after they moved him, or was it just a waste of everyone's time? I feel like protests can be effective, but if you just shout over someone so nobody hears anything, what did you really accomplish? Seems like you just proved you can't handle hearing the other side.

Is it really that serious though? I mean, people get worked up about stuff all the time and then move on the next day.
