Appreciation post: My uncle told me to never talk politics at work back in 2012

I was about 22 and fresh into my first real job in Phoenix. My uncle pulled me aside at a barbecue and said keep your mouth shut about who you vote for at the office. I thought he was being dramatic until I watched a coworker get passed over for a promotion after he went on a rant about the 2012 election. That guy left 6 months later because nobody trusted him with client stuff anymore. Has anyone else seen workplace talk backfire like that?

Never talk politics at work" is solid advice that hasn't changed since 2012. Your uncle saved you from a headache most people learn the hard way. One bad rant and you're branded as unreliable for years.

Yeah man, your uncle definitely looked out for you there. It's wild how one conversation can just... stick to you in people's minds forever, even if you're totally fine at your job.
