Got banned from a Facebook group for pointing out the scammy pricing, then realized I was the only one who did the math
Last Tuesday I was in a local buy/sell group in Spokane and saw a guy selling a "vintage" toolbox for $350 that I knew was a $40 Harbor Freight special with some fake rust painted on. I commented the price and the model number, and within 20 minutes my comment was deleted and I was muted by the admin who happened to be the seller's buddy. Has anyone else been shut down for calling out a rip-off in a group where the mods are clearly in on it?
That "price and the model number" move was smart but you gave them the knife to cut you with. In those groups the mods and the sellers are usually the same little circle, and a comment calling out price gets deleted fast, but a screenshot in a message to a few buyers goes nowhere. What works better is not posting it at all. Message the people who commented "interested" and just tell them the real price. Do that and there's nothing to delete. Also report the group to Facebook for scam activity, it rarely does much but it stacks up if enough people do it.
