Got written up at my hospital job for saying what I really thought about a patient's treatment
I'm a nurse in Portland and a few months back I had to choose between keeping my mouth shut or backing up a doctor's call I knew was wrong. The patient was 74 and the doc wanted to skip a scan to save time. I said something to the family they didn't like, basically the truth, and I got pulled into the office the next morning. My manager said I crossed a line and put a note in my file. I picked honesty over my spotless record and it cost me a raise I was up for in March, about $1,800 a year. Would you have said it anyway or kept your head down?
Wait, they skipped a scan on a 74 year old to save time? That's nuts. My uncle was 76 and they caught his blockage early because someone took ten extra minutes to run the test. Ten minutes. And you're telling me the doc was in that much of a rush that he rolled the dice on an old man's life? You did right by that family even if the system punished you for it. Losing $1,800 stings but you can sleep at night, the doc has to live with his shortcut.
