Hot take: I chose honesty over a promotion at work last month
My manager wanted me to blame a project delay on a coworker who was actually out sick. I told the truth in the meeting instead and ended up on a performance improvement plan. Has anyone else had to pick between keeping quiet and keeping your job?

Picked between keeping quiet and keeping your job" - that's the thing, you already chose. Your manager put you in a setup where the truth got you a PIP, not a gold star. The real lesson is that "honesty" only works when the company actually values it, and most of them just want cover.

Spoke to a former colleague from 15 years ago just last week. She said the same thing happened to her at a big tech firm back in 2019. She told her boss the product had a flaw, and next thing she knew she was being managed out.
