I finally spoke up about my neighbor's dog barking at 2 AM and got the whole block angry at me
Last Tuesday I politely asked my neighbor if he could keep his dog quiet after midnight because I haven't slept through a full night in 3 weeks. He got defensive and said I was being unreasonable, then he posted about it on our neighborhood group chat. Now 5 other people are messaging me saying I should just buy earplugs and stop causing drama. Has anyone else gotten backlash for addressing a noise issue that everyone else just ignores?

Man, that group chat nonsense is the worst. @christopher_flores46 hit it on the head - they all just want to pretend nothing's happening. I had a similar thing when I told my landlord the upstairs neighbor's kid was running a marathon at 6 AM every day, and suddenly the whole building acted like I was getting the guy evicted for simply existing. It's like they'd all rather be passive-aggressive about it on social media than actually fix the problem. At this point I'd just start keeping a log of the barking and text it to the group chat every morning.

Oh man, that's rough. I feel for you because I had almost the exact same thing happen with a guy who let his cat yowl outside my window at 3am every night. I finally snapped and asked him nicely and suddenly I'm the bad guy and everyone's saying I should just get some noise canceling headphones. It's like they all agreed to just suffer in silence and anyone who breaks that is the problem. The neighborhood group chat thing is brutal too because now you're outnumbered by people who probably just hit "like" on his post without even thinking. Don't let them gaslight you into thinking three weeks of lost sleep is no big deal.
