Rant: My uncle shut me down for asking about his new truck's gas mileage

At a family cookout in Milwaukee last Sunday, I mentioned how my coworker's new electric car only costs about $30 a month to charge. My uncle, who just bought a huge pickup, cut me off and said 'we don't talk politics here' before I could even finish. It wasn't about politics, it was just math. Has anyone else had a simple fact treated like a forbidden opinion?

My uncle in Texas did the same thing when I mentioned solar panels. Some people just hear what they want to hear.

A buddy of mine tried to explain how his new electric car worked to his dad. He spent twenty minutes on the battery and charging. His dad just nodded and then asked if he had to put special oil in it. Sometimes the facts just bounce right off a pre-made opinion.
