The time I doubted a welding class and ate my words in Tulsa

My buddy kept pushing me to take this weekend welding course at a community college in Tulsa. I figured it was just a hobby trap and told him I'd rather burn cash than burn rods. Three sessions in, I realized my tack welds were stronger than the ones I'd been doing at my job for 5 years. The instructor pointed out my angle was off by 10 degrees the whole time, and that one fix changed everything. Now I'm two months from finishing the cert and I can't say I was wrong about much else. Has anyone else had a skill they mocked turn out to be the exact thing they needed?
