Folded mirrors on a 40 foot trailer, driver insisted it was fine. Who's right?
Back in March I was at a terminal outside Houston waiting to load a Mustang. The guy in front of me had a Mack hauling an enclosed trailer, and his passenger mirror was folded flat against the cab. I asked him about it, said 'you know that's gonna be a blind spot on the interstate.' He just shrugged and said 'been running it like that for two years, never had a problem.'
He loaded up and left. I still think about that. On one hand, if it works for him, maybe it's not a big deal for shorter runs or if he checks his other mirror more often. On the other hand, one bad lane change and that's a lawsuit. I've seen drivers get cited for missing lights or bald tires, but I never saw a ticket for a folded mirror.
Do any of you run with a folded mirror on purpose, or is that just asking for trouble? Has anyone actually gotten pulled over for it?
Man, that's a whole different level of stubborn. I mean, two years is a long time to get lucky, but luck runs out eventually on a 40 footer. A folded mirror on the interstate is just asking for a lane-change incident. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather spend two minutes unfolding it than deal with that headache.
