Is it better to call a broker yourself or just get quotes online?

My last shipment from Texas to Oregon got delayed twice because the broker kept changing carriers, but my buddy swears by his online quote service and says it saved him $200. What's your take on going direct with a broker versus using those instant comparison sites?

Oh boy, where do I even start with this one! Look, I've been burned by both so honestly it's like picking which flavor of disappointment you want. Those online comparison sites are great until you realize the cheapest quote they found is from a guy named Dave who runs his operation out of a minivan. But calling a broker directly, you're literally just rolling the dice on whether you get the responsible one or the one who's three Coors in by lunchtime. I'd say save yourself the headache and just flip a coin, because either way you're probably getting delayed and overcharged.

Is that minivan Dave or is it the drunk broker before noon?
