A manager in Atlanta told me 'we don't do raises for potential' during my review. It changed how I ask for promotions.

Sounds like a bad manager. Good managers invest in potential.

Yeah but sometimes the potential just isn't there, you know? I mean, you can't polish a turd. Maybe it's just me but I've seen that happen a lot.
