Sounds like a bad manager. Good managers invest in potential.

Yeah but sometimes the potential just isn't there, you know? I mean, you can't polish a turd. Maybe it's just me but I've seen that happen a lot.

Yeah but I gotta kinda disagree with you there @torres.pat. Not every manager who skips someone is automatically a bad manager lol. Sometimes the "potential" people talk about is just wishful thinking and no actual skills to back it up. I've seen guys get hired with a lot of talk and no follow through, and at some point the manager has to make a call on who can actually do the job, not just who might learn it someday. Good managers do invest in people, sure, but they also know when to cut bait before it hurts the whole team.
