I tracked every job app for 3 months in a spreadsheet and the one I sent to a real person beat 40 online portals
After 42 online apps in Chicago got me zero calls, I started emailing hiring managers in town directly and got 3 interviews in 2 weeks, so what actually gets a human to read your stuff when the portal swallows everything?
Cold emailing wins every time. Portals are where resumes go to die. Real talk, hitting up a hiring manager direct gets you past the robot screeners and straight to a person who actually cares. I did the same thing last year, sent like 15 emails to managers at small shops and got 4 replies. Way better odds than blasting 100 apps into the void. You just gotta find their email and keep it short.
