My old boss told me 'always take the job with the worst commute' and I laughed at him back then

Your boss was dead wrong. A long commute will DRAIN the life out of you day after day. It eats up your free time, your money, and your energy for NO good reason. No job is worth sitting in traffic for hours if you can avoid it. Take the closest job every time and thank me later.

My cousin lives in the suburbs and commutes 90 minutes each way to his job in the city. He uses that time to listen to audiobooks about history and business, and honestly he says it's the most productive part of his day. Some people can turn travel time into personal development time if they have the right setup. Plus if the closer job pays less and has worse benefits, that math might not work out for everyone. I spent 45 minutes commuting for five years and it never bothered me because I used it as a mental transition between work and home. Different people value different things, and for some the right job with the right commute beats the closest job that doesn't fit.
