Question about remote vs in-office for software devs
I spent 2 years working remote at a startup in Austin and got way more coding done at home, but my coworker at the same company said they felt totally disconnected and missed out on promotions. Now I'm at a bigger company that wants me in the office 3 days a week and I'm wondering if being seen actually matters more for career growth. Has anyone else had a clear winner between remote and office for moving up the ladder?

Being visible definitely greases the wheels for raises, it's just how offices work.

one of my buddies worked fully remote at a mid size company for like 3 years. he was crushing it code wise, top performer on his team, but when promotion time came they kept picking people who were in the office more. he straight up told me that the guys getting promoted were the ones who grabbed lunch with the managers and got pulled into random hallway conversations. eventually he started going in twice a week just to be seen, and within 6 months he got a senior role. it really sucks but being physically around still matters way more than it should for climbing the ladder.
