Shoutout to the old career counselor who still picks up the phone
I called my college career center in Des Moines last Thursday because I was stuck on a cover letter. The same lady who helped me in 2011 answered, and she walked me through the whole thing for 20 minutes. She pointed out I was listing duties instead of results, so I rewrote one sentence to say I saved the company $12,000 a year. It felt like a fresh pair of eyes without paying for a fancy coach. Has anyone else gone back to an old counselor or mentor after years away?

Hold up, she remembered you after 13 years? That’s wild. My old counselor probably couldn’t pick me out of a lineup if I showed up with a name tag on my forehead. I’m honestly a little jealous you got that kind of help for free, because last time I tried to write a cover letter on my own, I stared at the screen so long the words started looking like they were spelled wrong. And that bit about results versus duties, that’s a real pro move. Most people just list what they did, not what it actually did for the company. You basically scored a secret weapon that most folks pay hundreds for. I bet that $12,000 line is gonna land you an interview, no doubt.
