Client in Denver told me my baseboards were 'visually loud' last Tuesday
I always ran baseboard with a rounded profile. Painted white. Looked fine to me. This client walks in, stands at the wall for maybe 20 seconds. Says the shadow line was too busy against their wide plank floors. Suggested a simple square-edge with a small reveal. I fought it for a minute. Then I ran one test piece. That simple change cut my install time for the whole house by about 15%. Less sanding, easier caulk lines. And honestly, their house looked calmer. Anyone else ever got style feedback that actually sped up their work?
Man, I used to roll my eyes so hard at clients who wanted to talk about "shadow lines" and "visual weight." I was all about speed and just getting the trim up. But then I had a job where the guy wanted a plain square edge with a tiny reveal, and I grumbled the whole first day. Turns out caulking those straight lines was way less fussy than chasing a rounded profile, and the paint job went faster too. That client was onto something and I hated admitting it. Now I actually ask people what look they want before I even load the truck.
