Glue-up cauls from scrap 2x4s beat my fancy clamps

I was always skeptical of homemade cauls, thought my parallel clamps were all I needed. Last week I was doing a 6-foot laminated header and my clamps kept bowing the pieces, so I ripped some 2x4s down and used them with a few wedges. Total game changer for keeping things flat, anyone else ditch fancy stuff for shop scrap?
