Pro tip: I finally tried using a 3/8 inch spacer block for my circular saw fence and it cut my layout time in half.
I was always eyeballing the distance from the guide line to the blade, but after my buddy in the next shop over said he just uses a scrap block clamped to the fence, I tried it on a big deck job last week and it made every cut perfectly parallel without any measuring.

Took me way too long to figure out the spacer block trick. I was out there with a tape measure for every single cut like a total rookie.

That's one of those tricks that seems so simple you feel dumb for not doing it sooner. I used to mark a line, then measure and mark the fence distance, and half the time I'd still be off by a hair. Now I just keep a block of plywood cut to that exact width right on the saw. It's perfect for ripping down a stack of trim boards to the same width, no math needed.
