Spent a whole Saturday fighting a stair tread that wouldn't sit flush
I was installing red oak treads on a set of stairs in a house near Portland and one tread kept rocking no matter what I did. After leveling, shimming, and even sanding the stringers for 6 hours I finally realized the subfloor underneath was cupped from a old water stain. Has anyone else run into hidden moisture problems that ate up your whole day?

Man that sucks, water damage always hides until you're waist deep in a project. Seems like every time I try to fix something simple it turns into a whole day of chasing hidden problems.

You said "waist deep" but I think you meant "knee deep" unless you're like really tall. Either way I feel your pain though, chasing hidden problems is just part of the fun with old houses.
