Hot debate: glue-down vs. stretch-in for residential basements?

I just finished a basement job in Denver where the homeowner wanted glue-down carpet over concrete. I argued for a pad and stretch-in because moisture and comfort are big deals down there. But after wrestling with that tack strip on uneven slab and hearing the guy complain about it feeling harder underfoot, I'm wondering if glue-down is actually the smarter call long term. Anyone else run into this choice and come down on one side?

You ever read that study from the Carpet and Rug Institute about basement moisture and adhesive failures? I think they found glue-down systems actually trap moisture between the concrete and carpet backing, leading to mold issues down the road. I had a customer in Kansas City who went glue-down in his basement and within two years the edges were peeling up and there was a musty smell we couldn't shake. The stretch-in with a good pad gives you breathability and that soft step you mentioned, plus you can pull it up if there's ever a water issue. I'd still go stretch-in for basements, even with the tack strip hassle, because the long term headaches are smaller.
