The seam roller trick that saved a hotel job in Nashville

I had a big hotel corridor job outside Nashville last month, 14 rooms of patterned carpet. The seams kept peeking open no matter how much adhesive I used. I tried everything, heavier roller, more tack, waiting longer on the glue. Finally an old timer at the supply house told me to back the seam roller with a hard rubber mallet tap right after rolling. Sounds dumb but it seats the edges into the glue bed way better. I did that on every seam after and not one opened up during the walk test. Has anyone else tried this or do you have a better method for stubborn patterned seams?

Was it really that big a deal though? I mean, 14 rooms is a decent size, but seams peeking open usually just means you rushed the adhesive or the carpet wasn't flat to begin with. Tapping a seam roller with a mallet sounds like a workaround for a problem that should've been solved with better prep. I've seen guys do that trick for years, but it never fixed the real issue, which is usually a bad subfloor or too much stretch in the pattern. Glad it worked for you, but I'd be more worried about why it needed that much force in the first place.
