Walked through a 1980s house in Springfield last week and the carpet seams were still perfect
I was there to give a quote for new flooring and the owner pointed out the original install. The seams in the living room were done with a hot melt seaming iron, the old kind you had to plug in. They were still tight and flat after 40 years... no puckering at all. It made me look at the cheap tape I've been using on quick jobs lately. Has anyone else seen an old job that just puts your current work to shame?

That bit about the old installer's number is funny, but honestly, a seam failing after just a year is almost always a prep issue, not the tape. The cheap tape still works if the floor is totally clean and flat. I've pulled up tape that looked fine because someone didn't sweep up enough grit first. The old guys were just really, really good at the boring prep work we all try to rush now.

Just had a customer ask me to redo a seam I put in last year. Felt like handing them the old installer's number instead.
