Found a 1962 copy of Dr. Zhivago at a Portland book sale with a CIA stamp inside
So I picked up this old paperback at a sale in Portland a few weeks ago for $2, and inside the back cover there's a little printed note about how the CIA secretly shipped this novel back into the USSR because the Soviets wouldn't publish it. Turns out they handed out thousands of copies to Russian visitors at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, which is wild to think about. Has anyone else stumbled on one of these Cold War book drops?
Wait, does yours actually say "CIA" on the stamp, or is it just that generic note about the Brussels fair? I've seen that printed blurb in a bunch of paperback editions, so I'm curious if yours has a real agency marking or if it's just the publisher's little history lesson.
