My old bookshelf used to hide banned books, now I just download them

Back in 2012 I kept a stash of stuff like Naked Lunch and some Soviet-era poetry behind a loose panel in my bookshelf, because my dad would flip if he saw them. Now I just pull up the same titles on my phone in like 10 seconds, no hiding needed, but it feels less like a win honestly. The change happened around 2018 when my friend in Tehran showed me how she gets censored news through a VPN, and I realized I was lucky my problem was just hiding a paperback. The internet made access way easier for me, but it also made me forget how many places still lock this stuff down hard. Anyone else feel like the digital shift took some of the thrill away, or do you just appreciate the freedom more? I'm curious what the cutoff point was for you folks.
