TIL my old boss in Milwaukee was wrong about why 'Slaughterhouse-Five' got pulled from our school library
Back in 2019 I worked at a high school library in Milwaukee, and my boss there said the book got banned everywhere because of the dirty words, plain and simple, so we just kept it behind the desk. Turns out that's only half the story. A lot of the challenges in the 70s and 80s were really about the war stuff and the anti-war message, not just the language. She had the reason backwards for like 15 years and nobody checked. Did any of you get a reason for a banned book that turned out to be totally off?
Man, I had the same thing happen with a different book. When I finally looked into it, the real fight was mostly about the politics and not the few curse words everyone kept repeating. My advice is to check the actual challenge records or a source like the ALA instead of trusting what gets passed around the staff room.
