I finally figured out why my censored screenshots kept getting pulled from a Discord server
I run a small server where we post screenshots of blocked pages and removed posts, and for 3 months moderators kept deleting my uploads without telling me why. I thought they were just being inconsistent. Then one admin finally showed me the log: the site strips metadata from every image on upload, so when I cropped out usernames with a phone screenshot, the original filename was still embedded with the person's handle in it. I had been posting 40 to 50 screenshots a month like that and never once checked the file name. Now I rename everything to random letters before I share, and nothing has been pulled since April. If you post censored screenshots anywhere, go back and check your old files. How are you all scrubbing metadata, and does anyone know a free tool that does it in bulk?
I always thought the filename thing was paranoia, like who's really digging through that. Then a friend showed me a post where someone's full name was sitting right in the file name of a "censored" pic and I felt dumb. Now I just rename to random junk and run them through ExifTool, it's free and does a whole folder at once.
