Showerthought: my aunt in Des Moines called my blog post "too spicy for church" and it made me rethink who I write for
My aunt in Des Moines read a blog post I wrote in April about why I left a church group, and she messaged me that it was "too spicy for church." I had typed the word "hypocrite" three times and the platform flagged it twice before I even hit publish. What stuck with me was her follow up: she said the same idea would land better with her friends if I said "people who say one thing and do another" instead. I sat with that for about a week, because she was right that the point still got through without the word that got me a 3 day mute on a faith forum back in January. Now I keep a little list of swaps that pass the filter and still say what I mean. Has anyone else found that a softer phrase sometimes hits harder than the banned word ever did?
