Finally caved and tried the dipping your knife in hot water trick for slicing chocolate cake

I always thought it was some Instagram gimmick, but after 3 bridezillas last weekend complaining about ragged slices, I gave it a shot for a wedding cake order in Cleveland. Dunked my chef's knife in hot water, wiped it dry, and sliced through a 4-layer devil's food like butter. No crumbs, no smearing, clean edges every time. Felt dumb for resisting it so long lol. Anyone else got a simple trick they stubbornly ignored for way too long?

I totally wrote that trick off as bougie nonsense until I tried it and felt like a fool

Did you heat the knife up again between each slice? I found that's the real key - one dip isn't enough for a whole cake. I'll do a fresh hot water rinse after every other cut or so, especially if the cake has a thick frosting layer. That way the chocolate doesn't start dragging through the buttercream.
