Oh come on, drop cloths are a scam anyway. They just give you a false sense of security so you get careless. I've been doing this for years and I never use them, never had a problem until I tripped over one my buddy left out and almost took out a whole shelf of paint cans. Plus they're a pain to clean and store, you know? They always end up with holes or paint soaked through them, so what's the point. Better to just be careful and work slow, that way you don't need a crutch. Sounds like you were being too careful with the rod and that's what caused the jam, not the lack of a cloth.
