Heard a homeowner in Boise say her old sweep used a shop vac on the firebox, and it made me rethink my whole setup
I was at a supply shop in Boise last month and overheard a woman tell the counter guy that her last sweep vacuumed out her firebox with a regular shop vac and she could smell soot in her living room for a week. It got me thinking about how I handle the fine ash on older masonry fireplaces, because a shop vac filter just pushes that dust right back into the air. What are you all running for HEPA filtration on the really dusty jobs, and is it worth the extra cash?
Eh, a shop vac doesn't really push dust back into the air, it just blows it out the exhaust. The problem is the filter. A standard shop vac filter only catches the big stuff, so the fine ash goes right through it and out into the room. That's why you smelled soot for a week. You need a HEPA filter rated for fine dust, and even then you have to seal it up right or it leaks around the edges.
