I compared my old solid brush kit to a new rotary one on a crusty flue last Thursday
I been using the same solid brush setup for years, the one my dad handed down. Last week I got a call about a flue in a 1920s house near downtown, it was caked with about a quarter inch of glaze. I tried the old brush for 20 minutes and barely made a dent, just pushing soot around. Then I borrowed my buddy's rotary attachment with a small drill, the difference was wild. It chewed through that glaze in maybe 10 minutes flat and left the walls almost clean. Has anyone else switched from manual to powered tools and seen that big of a jump?

Can't believe you pushed through a quarter inch of glaze with a solid brush for 20 minutes before giving up.

Ha, "pushed through" is a good way to put it. That reminds me of the time I spent way too long trying to scrape dried paint off a window with a razor blade. I just kept at it, convinced any second it would all peel off in one perfect sheet. Nope. After 15 minutes I had a bunch of tiny little flakes and a sore hand. I finally gave up and used that spray-on stuff, which worked in like 2 minutes. Felt real dumb. So yeah, I feel your pain on that one.
