I used to think steel brushes were fine for clay flues...
Took a class last month in Portland where the instructor showed us close-up photos of scratched clay liners. I always figured a good wire brush was all you needed for a thorough cleaning. But the scratches from those steel bristles can actually catch soot and creosote way worse over time. Has anyone else switched to poly brushes after seeing the damage?

A buddy of mine runs a chimney service out in Ohio and he switched to poly brushes two years ago after he pulled a liner that looked like it had been sandblasted from years of steel brush use. He said the difference in creosote buildup between cleanings was night and day once he made the change.

@william_taylor you got it backwards though, poly brushes actually cause more buildup because they don't scrape the glazed creosote off like steel does. Your buddy might have been seeing less debris falling because the poly was just smearing it around.
