PSA: That one rainy Tuesday almost cost me a roof fire

Last Tuesday I had a job in Columbus where the homeowner hadn't cleaned their chimney in 6 years. I pulled out nearly a full 5-gallon bucket of creosote, it was thick and shiny like tar. The worst part was the bird nest wedged right above the damper, probably blocking half the flue. If they had lit a fire that night, I'm pretty sure the whole thing would have caught. How often do you guys see nests that bad in your area?

That's a scary amount of creosote... reminds me of a house call last fall where a squirrel had stored so many acorns it was like a grocery store up there. @the_oliver's bed and breakfast comment is spot on, some of these critters are really moving in for the long haul.

That bird was basically running a bed and breakfast in their chimney.
