Shoutout to my old boss for the worst advice ever

My first boss, Jerry, told me to always use a 6-inch brush on any flue liner, no matter what. Tried it on a 7-inch clay tile in a 1920s house in Pasadena last week and just pushed all the soot around. Had to go back with the right size and do the whole job over. Anyone else have a 'Jerry' story from when they were starting out?

So did Jerry ever explain his one brush rule, or was it just something he said and you had to figure out the hard way? That kind of blanket advice seems more about being stubborn than being helpful. Sounds like you learned the real lesson on that Pasadena job.

Bet he got that from a tool salesman.

Totally fair point and to be honest I used to think the exact same thing until I actually watched him work. I figured he was just trying to upsell a set of demo tools or something. But @blake302 mentioned that Pasadena job and yeah that one changed my mind. Seeing him swap between a 3 inch and 5 inch scraper on the same wall just to match the texture pattern made me realize he wasn't being stubborn, just smart about what worked for him. Still sounds like a hard rule when you first hear it but the guy clearly earned his opinion.
