Vent: homeowners keep pulling the damper shut right after I light the first fire
I do about 15 to 20 cleanings a month around Fort Wayne and this keeps happening. I get the fire going so I can check the draw, and the customer walks over and shuts the damper because they think it's wasteful to let heat up the flue. Then smoke rolls back into the room and they look at me like I broke something. It matters because a cold flue can't pull, plain and simple. The smoke has nowhere to go but your living room. I had one guy in New Haven do it twice in one visit, and his wife told him to stop helping. Now I hand them the poker and tell them to stand back while it burns. Does anyone else deal with this, or is it just the folks around here?
